Steve Whitehead’s Everest Base Camp Challenge
Our very own Steve Whitehead, Junior and Cricket Director at Woodhouses CC, has just completed the adventure of a lifetime – an 18-day trek to Everest Base Camp.
For those who know Steve, it won’t come as a surprise that he faced this incredible challenge head-on. Inspired by a love of adventure and the tales of mountaineering legends, Steve trekked through valleys, forests, and across glacial rivers, finally reaching a breathtaking 5,364m (17,598ft) above sea level at Everest Base Camp – with the chance to summit Kala Patthar at 5,645m for one of the most iconic views on the planet.
But this was about more than just adventure.
Why Steve Did It
Steve undertook this challenge to raise money for charities close to his heart that support mental health and suicide prevention. His inspiration comes from friends and colleagues whose lives have been deeply affected by mental health struggles, including the tragic loss of a friend’s daughter, Kezia, in 2022.
In Steve’s own words:
“I would like to consider myself fortunate in not having had to struggle a great deal with my own mental health, but I am aware that there is a growing problem, particularly in young people and men. That’s why I feel it’s important to do what I can.”
The Charities Steve is Supporting
Steve has chosen three causes to support through his trek:
- Kezia’s Fund – supporting suicide prevention education and families impacted by suicide
- Andy’s Man Club – providing safe spaces for men to talk about mental health.
- Woodhouses Cricket Club Juniors – helping us continue to give young people the chance to build resilience, confidence, teamwork, and life skills through cricket.
Steve is funding the trek himself, meaning every penny raised goes directly to the charities.
